Maud de Boer-Buquicchio: ''The Congress and its members have a key role to play in combating sexual violence against children''
''Through the Lanzarote Convention on the Protection of Children against Sexual Exploitation, we should like governments to commit themselves to eliminating this scourge. Through the ONE in FIVE Campaign, we want it to become a matter of concern to everyone'', said Maud de Boer-Buquicchio, Deputy Secretary General of the Council of Europe, speaking on 9 February on the occasion of the seminar organised by the Congress. She emphasised the many areas which lie, wholly or partly, within the responsibility of local and regional authorities: kindergartens, schools, leisure centres, sports facilities, but also detention and holding centres and street safety. She called on local and regional elected representatives to use their proximity and their ability to communicate directly with their populations to raise public awareness and to carry out activities on the ground.
